Conor Gallagher
In a major transfer market coup, Tottenham Hotspur have successfully hijacked Aston Villa's move for Conor Gallagher, reaching a €40 million (£34.6m) agreement with Atlético Madrid.
The England midfielder is expected to fly to London this afternoon to undergo a medical at Hotspur Way, with Spurs aiming to register him by Friday's deadline in time for Saturday’s crucial London Derby against West Ham.
The Gazump: How Spurs Beat Aston Villa
The transfer represents a dramatic turnaround in the January window. Aston Villa had been in advanced talks for days and had verbally agreed upon a loan deal with an obligation to buy. However, Tottenham moved decisively on Monday with a permanent cash offer that Atlético Madrid preferred.
While the clubs in the West Midlands thought they had secured their man, Gallagher reportedly never gave a final "green light" to Villa. Once Tottenham, led by head coach Thomas Frank and sporting director Johan Lange, entered the fray, Gallagher made it clear his preference was a return to London.
Tactical Necessity and World Cup Hopes
The urgency for this signing was triggered by a significant blow to the Tottenham midfield. Rodrigo Bentancur was recently ruled out for at least three months following hamstring surgery, leaving Thomas Frank’s squad thin in the middle of the park. Gallagher’s high-energy, box-to-box style is seen as the perfect "Number 8" to revitalize a Spurs side that has struggled for consistency, currently sitting 14th in the Premier League.
For the 25-year-old, the move is as much about his international future as it is about club football. Having made only eight starts this season under Diego Simeone, Gallagher had fallen out of the England squad.
With the 2026 World Cup approaching this summer, he views a return to the Premier League as essential to prove his worth to England manager Thomas Tuchel and secure a spot on the plane.
Part of a Triple January Swoop
Gallagher’s arrival is expected to be the first of several major additions for Spurs this week. The club is on the verge of completing a £13 million deal for Souza, a 19-year-old Brazilian left-back from Santos who arrived in the UK on Monday for his own medical checks.
Additionally, Spurs are reportedly still in the market for a versatile attacker to provide cover for their underperforming front line. Amidst these incomings, the club has taken a firm stance on their current squad, reportedly rejecting a loan bid from Roma for defender Radu Dragusin to ensure they maintain sufficient defensive rotation for the second half of the season.
