Lucas Paquetá Transfer Request: West Ham Star Asks to Miss FA Cup Tie Amid Flamengo Interest

The Brazilian playmaker reportedly asked manager Nuno Espírito Santo to be left out of the selection, signaling a potential and abrupt end to his career at the London Stadium. While the club initially looked to maintain a united front, the growing noise surrounding his future suggests a deep-rooted desire to depart the Premier League this month.

Reports suggest that Paquetá has grown increasingly disillusioned with his professional life in England. The primary driver of this unhappiness appears to be the long-standing shadow of the FA betting investigation that has loomed over him for years. 

Although he was cleared of the most serious spot-fixing charges in the summer of 2025 following a grueling probe, he remains frustrated by the handling of the case and what his camp describes as a lack of psychological support from English football authorities. This mental fatigue has led the player to prioritize a move back to a familiar environment where he can rediscover his joy for the game.

Paquetá is now reportedly pushing for a return to his roots at Flamengo. The Brazilian giants have entered formal talks with West Ham, offering a fee in the region of €40 million. 

While this is significantly lower than the £85 million valuation the Hammers held during Manchester City's intense interest in 2023, the player’s representatives have indicated that his heart is no longer in London. The negotiation now rests on whether West Ham is willing to accept a financial hit to facilitate the exit of an unhappy star.

West Ham currently finds itself in a precarious position, sitting 18th in the Premier League and deeply entrenched in a fight for survival. For the club hierarchy, losing their most creative asset in January represents a massive competitive risk. 

Officially, the club has cited a recurring back issue as the reason for his absence against QPR to avoid further media speculation, but internal disappointment is reportedly high. Club officials feel they provided immense legal and emotional support during his investigation and hoped for more loyalty as they battle against the drop.

With the January window now in full swing, West Ham is weighing whether to force an unhappy player to stay and risk a toxic dressing room atmosphere or reinvest the Flamengo fee into more committed reinforcements. Targets like Kaio Jorge have already been mentioned as potential arrivals should the funds become available. 

The decision is complicated by the fact that the Hammers' attacking output has been lackluster this term, and losing a player of Paquetá’s vision without a proven replacement could be catastrophic for their top-flight status.

Paquetá's absence was notable during the clash with QPR, though a winner from Taty Castellanos ensured the Hammers progressed to the next round. Despite the win, the lack of creativity in open play remains a glaring issue for Nuno Espírito Santo. 

With a crucial London Derby against Tottenham scheduled for Saturday, January 17, the manager faces a defining decision regarding his team selection.
