In a pulsating El Clásico finale in Jeddah, Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 3-2 to lift the 2026 Supercopa de España.

The victory marks Hansi Flick’s first major trophy as Barcelona manager and extends the club's record in the competition to 16 titles. The match at the King Abdullah Sports City was a whirlwind of offensive brilliance, featuring five goals and a dramatic red card for Frenkie de Jong in the final minutes of play.

A Five-Goal Thriller in the Desert

The contest exploded in a frantic ten-minute window at the end of the first half. Raphinha opened the scoring for Barcelona in the 36th minute with a clinical low strike that settled early nerves. Real Madrid responded in spectacular fashion when Vinícius Júnior leveled the game in the 45th minute with a breathtaking solo effort, nutmegging Jules Koundé before sliding the ball past Joan García.

The drama intensified during the six minutes of stoppage time as Robert Lewandowski restored Barcelona's lead with a predator's finish, only for Madrid’s young star Gonzalo García to equalize again just moments before the whistle. The teams headed into the tunnel level at 2-2 after a breathless three-goal surge in the space of just five minutes.

The second half proved more tactical as both sides sought to gain control of the midfield. Barcelona eventually found the decisive breakthrough in the 73rd minute.

Raphinha secured his brace and the victory when his powerful effort took a significant deflection off Eduardo Camavinga, completely wrong-footing Thibaut Courtois. This moment proved to be the turning point, as Barcelona's defensive unit managed to stifle Madrid's immediate attempts to mount a third comeback.

The De Jong Red Card and Late Heroics

The closing stages were defined by a desperate Real Madrid siege. Xabi Alonso played his final card by bringing on Kylian Mbappé for the final 15 minutes, with the Frenchman stepping up his return from a recent knee injury.

The game took a chaotic turn in the 91st minute when Frenkie de Jong was shown a straight red card for a reckless, studs-up challenge on Mbappé just outside the area. Reduced to 10 men, Hansi Flick immediately shifted to a defensive shell, bringing on Ronald Araujo to bolster the backline in place of Lamine Yamal.

The drama didn't end there, as substitute Marcus Rashford had a golden opportunity to put the game beyond doubt on a counter-attack, only to fire wide when one-on-one with Courtois. Real Madrid had one final chance to force extra time in the 96th minute, but Alvaro Carreras saw his close-range effort smothered by Joan García.

The final whistle sparked wild celebrations from the Catalan side, who successfully navigated a five-minute stoppage-time period with a numerical disadvantage.

Historical Significance and Record-Breaking Stats

This victory cements Barcelona's domestic resurgence under Hansi Flick and provides the German manager with his eighth consecutive victory in a major final across his career. By winning their 16th Supercopa, Barcelona moves three titles clear of Real Madrid in the all-time standings.

Raphinha's performance was particularly noteworthy; having scored twice in the semi-final against Athletic Bilbao, his brace in the final confirmed him as the undisputed player of the tournament.

Despite the loss, Vinícius Júnior achieved a personal milestone by equaling Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema for the most goal contributions in major finals by a Real Madrid player.

This match also marked the fourth consecutive year these two giants have met in the Supercopa final, with Barcelona asserting their recent dominance by winning three of those four encounters.
