As the final preparations conclude for the 2026 Supercopa de España showdown in Jeddah, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has shifted the narrative surrounding the match.

While the global media fixates on the return of Kylian Mbappé to the Real Madrid starting lineup, Flick is adamant that his tactical blueprint remains centered on the collective strength of Xabi Alonso’s side rather than the individual brilliance of a single superstar.

Barcelona come into the final riding a wave of momentum following a dominant 5-0 semi-final victory over Athletic Bilbao, a performance Flick described as the definitive version of the team he expects to see on the pitch.

Flick’s Tactical Philosophy: Philosophy Over Personnel

In a packed pre-match press conference at the King Abdullah Sports City, Flick was repeatedly asked about his plans to neutralize Mbappé, who has traveled to Saudi Arabia after recovering from a late-December knee sprain.

While the German coach was quick to label the Frenchman as the most dangerous striker in the world right now, he refused to allow that acknowledgment to dictate his team's identity.

Flick emphasized that Barcelona’s success this season, which sees them sitting four points clear at the top of La Liga, has been built on a specific philosophy of high-pressing and defensive connectivity that does not change based on a single opponent.

He explained that while the coaching staff always adapts small details, the core approach remains the same because the threat from Real Madrid is multifaceted. Focusing solely on one player would leave gaps for other elite talents like Jude Bellingham or Vinícius Júnior to exploit.

By maintaining a disciplined high line and aggressive midfield transition, Flick believes Barcelona can dictate the rhythm of the game and force Real Madrid into a reactive stance, regardless of who leads their attacking line.

Squad Dynamics and Key Team Updates

Barcelona’s squad depth has become a significant advantage for Flick as he navigates the dense January schedule. Several key updates emerged from the final training session that suggest a very strong Blaugrana lineup.

Flick confirmed that Lamine Yamal is fully ready to start after his minutes were carefully managed in the semi-final. This provides Barcelona with their most potent creative outlet on the right wing.

In the center of the pitch, the return to full fitness of Frenkie de Jong and Eric Garcia creates a healthy selection headache, as the midfield has shown remarkable harmony in recent weeks.

Defensively, the presence of Ronald Araujo in full training is a major boost. Although a final decision on his inclusion in the starting XI will be made on the morning of the match, having his physical presence and recovery speed available is vital for countering Madrid’s verticality.

On the other side of the aisle, Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso faces his own challenges. While Mbappé is expected to play some part, Alonso has been cautious in his remarks, stating that the club will not take unnecessary risks with their star's long-term health.

Furthermore, the likely absence of Antonio Rüdiger due to a minor knee issue may force Aurélien Tchouaméni to drop back into a makeshift central defensive role, a potential weakness that Flick’s attackers will certainly look to exploit.

The Weight of History: Revenge or Redemption

While the Catalan media has framed this match as a chance for revenge following a narrow 2-1 defeat to Madrid earlier in the season, Flick was quick to dismiss such emotional motivations. He stated firmly that he does not like the word revenge because football is about progression, not looking backward.

He pointed out that since that October loss, Barcelona has played with much higher intensity and achieved more consistent results. The motivation for the squad is rooted simply in the fact that it is a final against their greatest rivals, which provides all the incentive necessary.

With Barcelona looking to secure their 16th Supercopa title and Real Madrid chasing their 14th, the stakes in Jeddah could not be higher.

For Flick, securing a trophy in January provides the psychological energy needed for a domestic treble charge. For Alonso, it is a crucial opportunity to claim his first major silverware with Madrid and silence critics following a period of inconsistent league form.
