Serghei Clescenco has stepped down from his role as Moldova head coach in the aftermath of their record 11–1 defeat to Norway, the country’s football federation (FMF) confirmed on Thursday.

The Tricolours were thumped by the rampant Norwegians in a 2026 World Cup qualifying fixture on Tuesday, with Manchester City striker Erling Haaland bagging five goals.

The result was Moldova’s heaviest ever loss, leaving them rooted to the bottom of Group I. After five matches, they remain without a single point and carry a goal difference of minus 22.

Clescenco, who had been in charge of the national side since 2021, led Moldova to promotion to League C in the UEFA Nations League. They also came close to reaching the Euro 2024 qualification play-offs, missing out narrowly in a spirited run.

However, Tuesday’s humiliating defeat in Oslo proved to be the breaking point for the 52-year-old. The FMF confirmed that Cleșcenco had offered his resignation, which was accepted, marking the end of his nearly four-year spell in charge.

Reflecting on his time at the helm, Clescenco issued a heartfelt statement through the FMF website: "In these approximately four years we have lived through many emotions together, some less pleasant, for which I apologise, but also many beautiful ones. Throughout this time, I have felt your support, from the fans, the players, the staff and the federation. I thank you all for the trust and encouragement you have given me."

The federation is now expected to begin its search for a successor as Moldova aim to regroup and salvage what remains of their World Cup qualifying campaign. They face Romania and Estonia in their next two qualifying fixtures in October.
