Aaron Ramsdale
Newcastle United have reportedly initiated discussions with Southampton for goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
This comes after Newcastle missed out on signing James Trafford from Burnley despite agreeing to a £27 million fee with the Clarets. Manchester City, however, had a matching rights clause in the goalkeeper’s deal, which they activated last week.
Ramsdale has agreed to terms with the Magpies, who are eyeing a loan move with a buy option clause.
Talks are still at an early stage, but Southampton are gearing towards a permanent sale, having signed the England international from Arsenal in a deal worth £25m last summer.
The Magpies have not had much luck in the transfer window this summer, repeatedly missing out on their key targets. Eddie Howe’s side are keen on bringing in another goalkeeper to rival Nick Pope for the starting spot.
Ramsdale played 32 games for Southampton last season as the Saints were relegated to the Championship. His proposed move to Newcastle would see him join his fifth Premier League club, having also had spells at Bournemouth, Sheffield United and Arsenal.
