Nigeria’s Super Eagles have soared into the semi-finals of AFCON 2025, overcoming a turbulent build-up to secure a commanding 2-0 victory over Algeria.

The win at the Stade de Marrakech was a testament to the squad's resilience, as they successfully silenced internal distractions to set up a heavyweight semi-final clash against the host nation, Morocco.

Overcoming the Bonus Row and Internal Friction

The narrative heading into this quarter-final was dominated by off-field drama rather than tactical analysis. On Thursday, reports surfaced that the Nigerian squad had threatened to boycott training and their travel to Marrakech due to unpaid bonuses from their first four matches of the tournament.

The situation was further complicated by rumors of a "player spat" involving talisman Victor Osimhen and coaching staff regarding tactical instructions.

However, a swift intervention by the Nigerian government and the NFF President, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, saw documents presented to the players proving that payments had been processed through the Central Bank of Nigeria. By the time the whistle blew in Marrakech, the "Super Eagles" appeared unified and laser-focused, dispelling any fears that the financial dispute would derail their continental campaign.

Match Analysis: Second-Half Surge Sinks the Fennec Foxes

Despite a dominant first half where Nigeria controlled possession but failed to convert chances—including a glaring miss by Akor Adams, the breakthrough finally arrived just two minutes after the restart.

Bruno Onyemaechi delivered a perfectly weighted cross from the left flank, allowing Victor Osimhen to rise above the Algerian defense and power a downward header through the legs of goalkeeper Luca Zidane.

The lead was doubled in the 57th minute through a clinical counter-attack. Alex Iwobi turned provider, sliding a pass to Osimhen who, showing great unselfishness, squared the ball for Akor Adams. The Sevilla forward rounded Zidane with ease to slot the ball into an empty net, redeeming his earlier miss and effectively ending Algeria's hopes.

Nigeria’s defense, led by the composed William Troost-Ekong and Calvin Bassey, ensured that Riyad Mahrez and the Algerian attack remained largely toothless for the duration of the 90 minutes.

Semi-Final Showdown: The Host vs. The Giant

With this victory, Nigeria remains the only team in the tournament to have won every single match, boasting a staggering +10 goal difference. They now prepare to face Morocco on Wednesday, January 14, in what is being billed as the "Final before the Final."

While Nigeria will enter as the form team, they will have to contend with a partisan Moroccan crowd and a host nation that has found its own rhythm.

The other semi-final will see Senegal face the winner of the evening clash between Egypt and Côte d'Ivoire, ensuring that the final four of AFCON 2025 is comprised entirely of the continent's elite powerhouses.
