Real Madrid and Brazil legend Roberto Carlos has undergone emergency heart surgery during a visit to his homeland. 

The 52-year-old travelled to São Paulo on a family trip and attended a routine medical check-up for a suspected blood clot in his leg. During the examination, doctors identified an issue with his heart, prompting immediate medical intervention.

Operation lasts longer than planned after complications


Carlos was rushed into surgery, which was initially expected to be brief but lasted longer than planned due to complications. Reports in Spain indicate the procedure was successful and that the former defender is expected to remain in hospital for observation over the next couple of days.

Carlos issues recovery update from hospital


Speaking after the operation, Carlos said he is recovering well and remains under close supervision.

“I’m fine now and under close surveillance,” he said.

Iconic career at Real Madrid and with Brazil


Widely regarded as one of the greatest left-backs of all time, Carlos enjoyed an illustrious spell at Real Madrid, spending 11 years at the club and winning multiple league titles and Champions League trophies. He made 527 appearances for Los Blancos, scoring 69 goals and registering 117 assists.

He also played for Inter Milan, Fenerbahce, Corinthians and Anzhi Makhachkala before retiring in 2012.

World Cup winner and Brazil centurion


Carlos made 127 appearances for Brazil and played a key role in their 2002 World Cup triumph. He also won two Copa America honours with the Selecao.
