The Black Cats will pay an initial £13m fee, and the midfielder is set to travel to Wearside to complete a medical and sign a three-year deal until 2028.

This comes after Leverkusen manager Erik ten Hag said Xhaka is not for sale, citing the club’s sale of key players like Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Jonathan Tah. But the Swiss will now get his desired move, returning to the Premier League after two years.

The 32-year-old spent seven years at Arsenal, where he made 297 appearances for the Gunners, winning two FA Cup trophies before moving to Leverkusen in 2023.

His move to Die Werkself was successful, helping the team win their first-ever Bundesliga title in 2024. He also won the German Cup and German Super Cup and scored six goals in 99 games for Leverkusen.

Xhaka will become the eighth summer signing for Regis Le Bris’ side, following the arrivals of Enzo Le Fee, Habib Diarra, Noah Sadiki, Reinildo Mandava, Chemsdine Talbi, and Simon Adingra. Sunderland are making a return to the Premier League after eight years and will face West Ham at the Stadium of Light in their opening game.
