Erik ten Hag is reportedly on the brink of being sacked by Bayer Leverkusen, just two Bundesliga matches into his tenure.
The former Manchester United boss was appointed in May to succeed Xabi Alonso following the Spaniard's departure to Real Madrid. However, his start to life in Germany has been far from smooth, with Die Werkself yet to register a league victory.
Reports indicate that the club's hierarchy will make a definitive decision on the Dutchman’s future once the summer transfer window closes. A verdict could come as early as Monday, though the club has yet to issue any formal statement.
The 55-year-old began his Leverkusen stint with a routine victory over Sonnenhof Grossaspach in the first round of the DFB-Pokal, but that early promise has since faded. His side slipped to a 2–1 defeat at Hoffenheim—despite taking an early lead through Jarell Quansah—and squandered a two-goal advantage to draw 3–3 with 10-man Werder Bremen on Saturday.
The situation has been further inflamed by his post-match comments following the draw with Bremen, in which he criticised his squad’s fitness, mentality, and cohesion.
He said: "The players aren't ready. We have a new team and some of the players aren’t at all fit enough to play. The team didn’t function at all during the final stage of the game. That’s just the way it is. They need to bring more intensity and get fitter in order to meet my standards. After the international break, we face real competition and must perform as a team.
"That begins with taking responsibility and delivering individual performances. And they have to demonstrate to me that they want to work together. First, we need to have the players. There’s been a major upheaval. A lot has changed in the leadership and hierarchy of the team. Now, new players have to step up. We didn’t do that well today."
Meanwhile, it is now being reported in the German media that Ten Hag’s position is now considered “extremely critical,” with mounting internal pressure threatening to cut short his reign after just three months.
