Dayot Upamecano is seeking a significant salary increase to bring his wages in line with Alphonso Davies, as Bayern Munich prepare to open fresh contract talks with the France international.

The 26-year-old, who featured in 38 competitive matches last season, is reportedly requesting a raise from his current €10 million annual salary to around €15m – the figure Davies is believed to earn following his recent extension.

The German champions are eager to keep the defender and initial discussions are expected to take place later this year with Upamecano, whose current contract runs until 2026 and is seen as an integral part of their long-term plan.

This mirrors Bayern's aim of locking down core players as part of a squad rebuild under head coach Vincent Kompany. With the likes of Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala already committed to new deals, the club is keen to avoid uncertainty surrounding one of their starting centre-backs.

Upamecano joined Bayern in 2021 from RB Leipzig and has made over 150 appearances for the Bavarians, scoring five goals. He has also won six trophies during his time at Allianz Arena, including three Bundesliga titles.

The Frenchman is reportedly attracting interest from Premier League teams, but Bayern have delayed contract negotiations until after the close of the transfer window on 1 September and are confident in securing an extension for him. Kompany’s men return to action on Saturday, with a home fixture against Augsburg.
